Sprightly Sarah is kicking through a lifetime of health battles.
Sarah, 11, was born with Down syndrome, and a heart condition.
She had open heart surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital, at age 2, to deal with her issues and since then, has also had five surgeries at the RCH to deal with respiratory and hearing problems.
“Sarah has had a lot of health complications, but she has shown spirit and determination, and fought back every time,” Dr Laura Marco, a RCH pediatrician, said.
The year 5 student joined a karate club last year to boost her confidence and strength. Last week, she won a karate competition, and earned her dragon belt.
“She also broke a block of wood,” Sarah’s mother, Cathy, added proudly.
Sarah also attends the RCH’s Down Syndrome Assessment Clinic, which is the first of its kind in Victoria, for checks and tests.
“The clinic is important because children with Down syndrome often have a number of different health needs, and it can be hard for families to navigate the health system,” Dr Marco said. “We help them link into appropriate ongoing supports and services.”
Dr Marco hopes Sarah keeps karate kicking her way to good health.
“It’s not just Sarah, but her whole family works really hard to let her thrive,” Dr Marco said.
“All the things she’s doing in life are really important for her.
